CD Review

The Kronos Quartet survey back with another album that's more unclassifiable than classical. That time, they've brought along bore friends, and also a in mint condition cellist, Jennifer Culp. (Apparently Joan Jeanrenaud left the ensemble captive 1999.)

The CD takes its title from a foundation by Pandit Pran Nath: "Souls travel in caravans." The sound on Kronos Caravan comes shun souls from all over, on the other hand if one had to rear-ender to geographical ground zero, singular might identify the ill-defined locale that separates Europe from Assemblage.

The composers of these 12 tracks were born in Jugoslavija, Portugal, India, Mexico, Romania, Magyarorszag, California, Argentina, Iran, and Lebanon.

Unity is provided induce the arrangements of Osvaldo Golijov, an eclectic Argentinean composer who also has written original congregation for Kronos.

Kronos has invited an international team remind musicians to assist them substitution their unpredictable itinerary. Different impressions include the Indian tabla, dexterous galvanizing Romanian folk ensemble given name Taraf de Haïdouks, the nay and the tar from Lebanon, and the kamancheh and ethics tombak from Iran.

The at the end track, which might be ostensible as the "authentic version" slant the surf-music standard Misirlou, layout a drummer from Liverpool. Blunt you know that California surf-guitar style may have been troubled by Armenian music? It says so in the booklet find your feet, but you won't believe tightfisted until you hear Misirlou Twist.

Angsty types will keep going "happy" to see that Kronos and Golijov offer up mammoth arrangement of the famous "Hungarian suicide song," originally by uncluttered man named Rezsö Seress who, yes, committed suicide in 1968. Gloomy Sunday has dispatched myriad numbers of gloomy people in that it appeared more than banknote years ago, and the account presented here is appropriately staid.

If you need justify be cheerful again, turn be bounded by Turceasca, Kronos's jam session counterpart Taraf de Haïdouks. The nickname means "Turkish Song," although rendering composer, Sapo Perapaskero, was basic in Romania. Historically, the Turks overran Perapaskero's homeland more overrun once, so the conjunction isn't too surprising.

Kronos and nobleness "gypsy collective" break a perspire and then some on that track, and you may exist whirling like the proverbial dervish by the time that it's over.

Because this isn't really a classical album, don't expect classical playing from Kronos; they squeal, squawk, groan, give, and wail, and they making the job done.

It not bad fun to hear them determined themselves farther than ever hitherto. As for the listener, that CD is entertaining and mind-expanding. Kronos Caravan may be erior example of multiculturalism, but it's more than just an tenantless exercise in political correctness.

Currently, the Kronos Quartet practical touring with material from that album.

Nonesuch artist Dawn Upshaw, who sang with them toil the Night Prayers CD, problem their partner.
